ホイットニーは、2001年にマイケルの30周年記念ライブのステージに立った時のことを振り返り、自分とマイケルが異様に衰弱して見えることに気づいて怖くなったと発言している。「マイケルを見て、自分を見た。怖くなって来たわ。自分を見ながら、『駄目。こんなふうになるのは嫌だわ。そんなことは起きてはならない。私たちふたり共なんて』と思った」と語り、同ライブに出演した頃、自分もドラッグを使用していたことをオプラ・ウィンフリーに認めている。

「彼は、鏡に映った自分自身のようだと思う？」とオプラに聞かれると、ホイットニーは「ええ、ある意味では。私はあの道はたどりたくなかった」と答えている。
